The Cold Within
James Patrick Kinney
Extract2
The third one sat in tattered clothes;
He gave his coat a hitch,
Why should his log be put to use?
To warm the idle rich?
The rich man just sat back
And thought of the wealth he had in store,
And how to keep what he had earned
From the lazy, shiftless poor.
And the black man's face bespoke revenge
As the fire passed from his sight.
For all he saw in his stick of wood
Was a chance to spite the white.
1. Tattered clothes mean old and worn out clothes. This expression symbolise that the person was poor. The third one gave his coat a hitch because it was very cold and he wanted to get warmth by all the resources he had.
2. The third one does not wanted to give his log to warm the rich because he hates the rich as he thinks that the rich never helps the poor and does not wanted him to get benefitted from the warmth.
3.The rich man thinks that he has earned by his hard work . He hates the poor as he thinks that they are undeserving and does not work hard. So he doesn't wanted the poor to get warmth from his log of wood.
4.The black man also had a prejudice against the white as the white also hated him and it was his turn to take revenge . So he also refused to give his log
